t s been almost a year since the first official release of ASP.NET AJAX, and plans for the next release are well under way. Currently, features for the next release are available in a separate package called the ASP.NET Futures. In this part of the book, we ll cover some of these features. 11 is dedicated to XML Script: a declarative language similar to the ASP.NET markup, which is used to instantiate client components in the page. 12 covers the drag-and-drop engine, which you can use to drag and drop DOM elements in the page. By the end of these chapters, you ll be ready to use the main features that will be included in future releases of ASP.NET AJAX.

In the left column you have the map function, and in the right column you have the optional reduce function. Don t worry about the reduce function for now, because I will discuss this in much further detail in 8 when you look at the concept of map/reduce in detail. In the Map Function column, you will see the code shown in Listing 7-1.

Here is also where you ll find the Bookmark button. When colored blue, this option indicates you have not yet added the video to your collection. Tap the word Bookmark, and it turns gray. At the same time, YouTube adds it to your bookmarks list. You can view and change that list by tapping the Bookmarks button in the button bar, and then tapping Edit on the Bookmarks screen.

Listing 7-1. The Default Map Function function(doc) { emit(null, doc); } This is an example of the map function of a CouchDB view. It takes the document object doc as an argument and outputs results using the emit(key, value) function. Each call to emit corresponds to a row in the view, assuming that the document is successfully processed for all views in the design document. Every time a view is requested, all documents that have been added, updated, or deleted will be processed and inserted in the view, before returning a response. Beneath the Map Function column you will find a Run button. Click this button to execute the temporary view (Figure 7-4).

XML Script is a declarative language for creating instances of JavaScript objects at runtime, setting their properties, and specifying their behavior, using an XML-like syntax similar to the ASP.NET markup code. In an HTML page, you can separate content (the markup code) from style by embedding the style information in a CSS file. Similarly, in an ASP.NET page, you usually define the page layout using declarative markup code in an ASPX page.

Here are some tips for using the YouTube application: Use the red Clear button at the top-right corner of the History screen to erase your YouTube viewing history. People don t have to know you ve been watching that skateboarding dog. Don t overlook the Related Videos list. Scroll down on the video info screen to find related videos that you may want to view. YouTube is pretty clever about adding listings that you may actually want to see. You cannot swipe to delete bookmarks listed on the Bookmarks screen. To remove items, tap Edit, tap the red minus ( ) button, and then tap Delete.
